British submarine that disappeared in 1943 suddenly turns up 40 years later fully functional, but without any sign of the crew. The only survivor agrees to help the navy solve the mystery.
In 1981 World War 2 British submarine suddenly surfaces in the middle of Baltic Sea. Russians suspect some sort of Cold War provocation, but it turns out that this is HMS Scorpion, a boat that went missing in 1943 during a patrol and now unexpectedly reappeared. The submarine is empty - there is no sign of the crew, there are no bodies or any sign of violence aboard. British navy brings down Jack Hardy, who was crew member during the last patrol and somehow survived the boat disappearance. He spend rest of the war as German prisoner and now is spending his retirement on Malta. Unfortunately he doesn’t remember anything from few last days aboard HMS Scorpion, so he can’t help them solve the mystery. Nevertheless navy and intelligence convinces him to take part in the experiment aiming to find out what happened to Scorpion and other boats that disappeared during the war in the same area. Hardy joins the crew on the cruise that will follow the route of original last patrol of HMS Scorpion. Soon strange things begin to happen aboard the submarine.
Another British war movie that mixes the paranormal elements with war stories and so far this is the only one with decent plot, although still Ghostboat is far from being a masterpiece. David Jason, usually linked with comedy projects, here depicts old sailor troubled by the shreds of his memory from 1943. Interesting story set aboard World War 2 submarine that could have been better if the movie would be shorter or the narration would be set in different way. Unfortunately the film is over 2 hours long and the flashbacks from the beginning are revealing where the whole story is heading almost from the start, so overall it is only a decent piece of entertainment.
