When civil war sets the African country on fire no one is left as bystander, even young kids are forced to join the rebels and kill the enemies of the cause.
Civil war sweeps through a West African country - rebels are trying to take over the area and the government, even with the international support, struggles to keep them under control. For young Agu and his family it means they have to flee. His father manages to buy place in a car leaving for Agu’s mother and younger siblings, but himself has to stay behind with two sons. Soon the rebels arrive to their village and start to kill adults suspecting they are government supporters. Unfortunately a mentally disturbed woman that held grudge against Agu’s family point them as agents of the government. His brother and father are killed while Agu manages to escape. After wandering round the abandoned area Agu is captured by the rebel unit and forced to join them. Commandant, the only adult in the unit, leads his teenage soldiers through the country and replaces any losses by recruiting new kids. Their training is crude and from the start they are taught to be violent and merciless towards anyone outside the unit.
War movie based on the novel telling the story of child soldiers of West Africa forced to leave their childhood behind and join the civil war. The story is quite similar to War Witch and Johnny Mad Dog and to be honest Beasts of No Nation does not have much more to show than what those two movies already shown - the senseless violence and children stripped of their innocence to fight the wars they do not understand and should not be part of. While made with decent effort Beasts of No Nation lacks originality.
