American soldier organizes the Filipino guerrillas to disrupt the Japanese occupation and prepare ground for Allied invasion.
After American forces under General MacArthur have pulled out of Bataan, Colonel Joseph Madden of the US Army stays behind to organize guerrilla fighters. With help from the Captain Bonifacio he builds a tough resistance against the occupying Japanese troops. Bonifacio is a grandson of Filipino resistance hero and also ex-fiancee of Dalisay Delgado, woman used as Japanese to make "Tokio Rose" like radio broadcasts. Filipino guerillas are tired, have limited sources of weapons, ammo and other resources. Also after a long struggle against much stronger enemy they start to doubt if Americans are ever gonna come back. Japanese are using civilians to get revenge for all the soldiers killed by the partisans, but this only boosts their morale and will to fight.
Film is a tribute to Filipino resistance that kept fighting for over 2 years under the Japanese occupation, but also has all the flaws of other John Wayne movies - low level of realism, mixing in the romantic subplots that doesn’t improve the movie and a bit too much pro-US propaganda for some viewers taste.
