Panzerkampfwagen IV

Panzerkampfwagen IV

The most advanced German tank at the eve of World War 2 - far better than anything that Allies could throw into battle. During the invasion of Poland they were entering the service, but only small part was used in action. Surprisingly out of 2500 deployed for the operation over 600 were lost, mostly due to anti-tank guns, thus for invasion of France the armor was improved. On Eastern Front and in Northern Africa they proved to be good tanks, especially with new long guns that were able to deal with thicker armors. Before M4 Sherman and T-34 tanks were introduced it was the best tank in the war, but during the operation in Russia the armor and guns often were not enough to match those of T-34 and KV-1. A lot of Panzer IV saw action in France and Italy, where the opposition was weaker, some of them were used even after the war (small number was used in Syrian forces in 1960s).
