Panzerkampfwagen III was first modern German tank in the beginning of World War 2 - good armor and decent weaponary keep it useful (after modifications) throughout the war. Small units of Panzerkampfwagen III were used in invasion of Poland and France, later the tank was the core force of Afrika Korps in Northern Africa. During the invasion on Soviet Union Panzer III begun to struggle in battles against T-34 and heavier tanks. The modifications to the armor (especially the characteristic side skirts) extended the lifespan of Panzer III, also new guns, but on the Eastern Front they were playing only support role for Tigers and Panthers. Pazner III were used in Italy from 1943 and were effective in defensive operations against Shermans. Overall it was a work-horse of Wehrmacht during World War 2 used on all fronts, but by 1944 they were obsolete since heavy tanks took over the main operations on both sides.
