German light tank developed in 1934. Together with Panzerkampfwagen I it was the main weapon of Blitzkrieg in Poland, Belgium, Holland and France. Panzerkampfwagen II was slightly bigger version of Panzer I and had similiar characteristics: was fast, light, was able to manouver in rough terrain. In 1939 it proved enough to overpower the few Polish tanks, but during invasion on France the armament proved to be insufficient against heavily armored French tanks (like H35 or Char B1). After the French campaign Panzer II was used as reconnaissance vehicle for the heavier tanks, where it could make good use of the high speed and low silhouette. Also they were used for training duties and militia actions against partisans.
