Franco-Flemish War (1297-1305)

While the County of Flanders was part of French Kingdom since Treaty of Verdun in 843, they kept a lot of independence from French crown. French king Philip IV was determined to strengthen his kingdom and one of the elements was to strip Flanders of that special status, especially since Flanders had very rich cities in its land, such as Bruges, Ghent or Lille. The actions of Philip IV, such as increase of taxes, was met with protests from Flemish noblemen as well as the citizens.

Guy of Dampierre, Count of Flanders, was seeking ways to cut the ties with French crown and tried to find ally in King Edward I of England, which led to imprisonment of Guy and two of his sons by French king. The main cities of Flanders were taken under royal protection until Guy paid an indemnity and surrendered his territories to French crown. This lead to revolt among the inhabitants of Flanders, who felt oppressed by Philip IV. King of France sent his army to stop the revolt, but with strategy of burnt ground the French knights only drew more people to forces of Guy of Dampierre.

After several small skirmishes and papal mediation both sides reached armistice, which lead to negotiations between Philip IV and Edward I of England. English King reached peace treaty with France, which left Guy alone to face consequences of revolt. Army of Philip IV entered the Flanders in 1300 and started occupation of the county, which only strengthen the ties between local noblemen and tradesmen, who up to that point had slightly different views on the future.

Battle of the Golden Spurs was a turning point of the war, during which commander of French army, Robert de Artois was killed together with many of French noblemen. This surprising victory strengthen the position of Flanders and forced French king to change his approach. After few lesser battles, even killing or capturing some of the revolt leaders French king signed Treaty of Athis-sur-Orge in 1305, which recognized Flemish independence for the cost of the cities of Lille, Douai and Bethune, which were transferred to French crown.
