First Barons’ War war movies

First Barons’ War was internal English conflict between King John I, known as King Landlack, and the English barons that tried to force him to make political reforms that would reduce the power of the ruler and gave more liberty to free people (especially the nobles themselves). After raising tensions King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta reform that reduced his power, which seemed to be the end of the conflict, but soon after he decided to hire mercenaries that were available after his disastrous French campaign and fight for regaining his power.

Rebel barons took over control over strategic castle of Rochester and turned to Prince Louise, son of King Philip II of France and grandson-in-law of King Henry II of England, for help. With French knights they put a lot of strain on King John forces and during the campaign the battles took place for control over the castles (Dover, Rochester, Windsor, Lincoln and Hertford). The turning point was death of King John - he died of dysentery in 1216 - when his nine-year-old son, Prince Henry, took over the throne English barons realized they could much easier reach their goals by dealing with Henry than King Louis, so they began to switch side and fight against French forces.

In 1217 Louis finally gave up his claim to the English throne and signed the Treaty of Lambeth on 11 September 1217.
