During the Eighty Years’ War Haarlem was among the Dutch cities that joined the revolt against the religious oppression from king Philip II of Spain. While Spanish army was regaining the territory, killing those who oppose the king, citizens of Haarlem decided to take a stand and defend their city. The siege lasted for over 7 months during which Spaniards used artillery and tunnels to destroy the city walls. The winter caused hunger among the defenders, especially since enemy blocked any routes of resupply. The city fell into Spanish hands on 13 July 1573, most of the defenders were executed and the city plundered.
