Soviet nuclear false alarm 26 September 1983

Cold War

The Soviet nuclear false alarm incident wasn’t actually a battle, it wasn’t even known to public at the time. On 26 September 1983 Soviet early warning system identified single missile heading for the territory of Soviet Union and that it was launched from United States.

The officer that was responsible for alarming the superiors that night was Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov. The Soviet strategy for such occasion was the immediate nuclear counter-attack against the United States, but Petrov decided to check the information again before alarming the Soviet retaliation system. The situation at that time was tensed since three weeks earlier the Korean Air Lines Flight 007 incident took place (read more about the incident) and earlier during naval exercise few American planes entered the Soviet airspace.

Despite all of this Petrov waited for other reports coming from the system, but there were none. Petrov decided it was computer error rather than American attack since it was logical that Americans would strike with hundreds and not just a single missile. Situation changed when computer detected four other missiles, all of them heading towards Soviet Union.

Petrov had no other source of information since Russian ground radars couldn’t detect the missiles (and confirm attack) until they will be close to Soviet borders. Waiting for the confirmation would leave Soviets only few minutes to make decision about counter-attack. But nevertheless Petrov decided to wait, agan convinced that it was false alarm caused by computer malfunction.

Since radars haven’t picked any objects heading toward Soviet Union they started the investigation that proved the alarm was false. It is believed that the reason behind the whole incident was rare alignment of sunlight on high-altitude clouds picked by the Soviet satellite. Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov knew that the system was installed recently and trusted in his instinct and training that Americans would not start the war with just 5 missiles.

After the incident Petrov was interrogated because his actions were breach of the rules, but finally he was praised as a hero. He single-handedly stopped the biggest threat to the humanity in history. Potential nuclear war was only minutes away...
