K-19 incident 4 July 1961

Cold War

During an exercise in North Atlantic, close to Greenland, aboard K-19, first generation Soviet nuclear submarine equipped with nuclear ballistic missiles, a malfunction in reactor was detected that could have lead to its meltdown.

Unable to contact the headquarters for help (due to damaged long-range radio system) and unable to continue patrol Captain Nikolai Zateyev decided to turn around and head towards base, but the reactor temperature rose quickly and he ordered his crew to make a emergency cooling solution. His short-range radio messages were received by another Soviet submarine, diesel powered S-270, which tried to come to rescue. The messages were also intercepted by American warships in the area, who offered assistance, but Zateyev, afraid of giving away military secrets to enemy, refused.

The crew of K-19 was evacuated aboard S-270 and the sub was towed back to the port. During that patrol several K-19 crewmembers received fatal doses of radiation, eight of them died shortly after the return to port.
