K-129 incident 8 March 1968

In February 1968 Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129 left Rybachiy Naval Base on Kamchatka and travelled south-east on patrol that was a bit surprising for the crew - they have just finished 2 long patrols and were not expected to leave the port until May. After leaving the base K-129 contacted the headquarters on 24 February to report the test dive. That was the last contact with the crew of K-129 and few weeks later Soviet Navy declared the submarine missing. Surface and air units were sent to find the missing boat, but there was no trace of K-129.

Meanwhile American forces, after detecting what they were suspecting was a rescue mission of Soviet Navy on Pacific, checked the available data and reached the conclusion that K-129 most like have sunk far further that Soviets were searching - about 600 miles west of Hawaii. Special ship was sent to recover what was left of K-129 since Soviet did not knew that US Navy have found the right area. Americans were hoping to secure nuclear missiles and torpedoes, electronic equipment and intelligence data. To this day it is unclear how big part of the K-129 Americans managed to pick up of the bottom of the ocean, most likely only bow section of the sub.

There were several theories what might have happened to K-129, from technical failure of the ballistic missiles to collision with American submarine, but one of the theories suggested that K-129 was actually rogue warship (since the wreck was found far away from where Soviets were expecting it to be and without clear explanation why would the sub be in that part of Pacific). With not enough informations about the wreck it is impossible to name the true events behind the incident.
